Extract:
They continued down the passage until they came to the door. Alexander took a deep breath, knocked twice and began to count. He reached to ten and carefully knocked twice again as clearly as he could. For a moment nothing happened, and then the door swung inwards. Slowly, the cats went through it.
“Stand up straight for inspection!” boomed a voice from somewhere behind them.
The cats leapt into a line, chests puffed out and eyes straightforward. A small tortoiseshell cat with no tail marched in front of them and sat down, looking at them sternly. Duncan couldn’t help but stare at the place where her tail should have been.
“Lost it in the battle!” she shouted at them.
“Now what have we got here? Scruffy, very scruffy!”
She looked up at Colin.
“When was the last time you chewed between your toes?” she asked, eyeballing him. Colin shrugged indecisively.
“Urm, not an' all sure miss, last week maybe?”
“Last week! Last week! And it is Frauline to you! I want you to chew between each toe twenty times starting right now!”
Colin looked at Frauline to see if she was joking or not, and decided probably not, so he quickly began chewing.
Ladies Lunch Review
Ever since I was invited to Tatler’s launch of their innovative magazine style menu, and sampled the delicious teasing entrees, I’ve been meaning to go and eat there. The opportunity arose when I received an invitation to “Ladies who Lunch”, a networking “working” lunch on a Friday afternoon; food and booze - perfect. We were greeted with a glass of bubbles on arrival, superb on an empty stomach. As soon as I’d sipped it I knew that a few of us wouldn’t be returning back to work. (Namely me). Again, it was out with the entrees, this time it was some kind of tender marinated beef with Matt’s (the chef) special secret satay sauce. (I know it’s secret because no amount of cajoling and wheedling could get the recipe out of him). Next there were corn fritters with sour cream and herb dip, and sweet chilli sauce. And another glass of bubbles came my way, so I felt I had to drink it, just to be polite of course... We sat down and the restaurant was buzzing with happy (tipsy) ladies, all eagerly awaiting the meal. We weren’t disappointed. To start, we had delicately spiced home made tomato soup with a warm, freshly-baked roll. It was then a choice of either Delice of Salmon, Stuffed Chicken Breast, or a vege option. I went for the Salmon. It was cooked perfectly, soft and moist, the skin left on and pan fried until crispy. I had buttery new potatoes and a fresh garden salad to accompany the fish, all drizzled with a sticky balsamic dressing. To follow the mains, we were given home made cookies and a choice of coffee or tea. After three cookies and still failing to guess the recipe correctly, I decided to hell with it, and ordered another glass of wine. I worked in hospitality for eight years, so I appreciate the fantastic effort made to feed over forty hungry ladies with such delicious food, and all for only $28 each.
